Under the Allied Health and Dental Services Initiative, individuals who are referred by a General Practitioner can receive Medicare rebates for sessions with me. There are two different plans which allow such rebates: 1)the GP Mental Health Care plan and, 2)the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan. Plan 1) allows for a maximum of 12 sessions with me per calendar year (with an additional 6 sessions under special circumstances. Plan 1) is appropriate if mental and/or emotional symptoms are part of the patient's condition. Plan 2) allows for a maximum of 5 sessions with me per calendar year. Plan 2) is appropriate if mental and/or emotional symptoms are not part of the patient's condition. Unused sessions in both plans can be carried over into the next financial year.
For plan 1 (the GP Mental Health Care plan), the GP prepares and submits to Medicare a two-page GP Mental Health Care Plan (GPMHC plan, MBS Item 2710) requesting my services for the patient.
For plan 2 (Enhanced Primary Care or EPC), the GP submits an EPC program referral form for allied health services, requesting my services. If the GP wishes to use me as part of a team of practitioners, they need to submit, as well, MBS item 723. MBS item 723 is only required if there are more than 3 Allied Health Care Providers required for patient care.
Under plan 1, I am covered for the 12 individual and 12 group sessions per year, with an additional 6 available under special circumstances. My Medicare Provider Number for Psychology for plan 1 is 2843011B. Item numbers and Medicare payments for plan 1 are as follows:
Item 80100 - 20-50 minute private consultation. $53.15
Item 80110 - 50+ minute private consultation. $75
Item 80120 - one hour group. $19.10 per person.
Under plan 2, I am covered for 5 sessions per calendar year, with a rebate of $47 per session. Therefore sessions with me under plan 2 are a half hour long. My Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) provider number is 10968.
In both plans the patient pays for the session with me, receives a receipt, and goes to a Medicare office for the rebate.
Many thanks,
Cory Sea

To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Maryanne Sea. I am a social worker (Master’s in Social Work degree) working in private practice in Mullaloo and Murdoch, WA. I also teach courses in self-care to staff of a number of Perth hospitals.
I am registered with Medicare to provide counseling and mental services under the new Health Department initiative, “Better Access to Mental Health.”
Within this initiative, individuals who are referred by a General Practitioner for counseling can receive rebates for their sessions.
The General Practitioner needs to prepare a GP Management Plan (MBS item 721 – required for all Medicare referrals) and, if necessary, coordinate Team Care Arrangements (MBS Item 723),
MBS item 723 is only required if there are more than 3 allied health care providers required for the patient’s care.
A GP Management Plan is a comprehensive plan for an individual’s condition. It includes: goals, services and treatments required, an individual’s actions and a date for a review.
As a social worker, I am covered for up to 12 individual and 12 group sessions per year. The rebate for a one hour session is $66.05.
The Item numbers and rebates are as follows:
Item 80160 – (Session lasting more than one hour) - $66.05
Item 80150 – (Session lasting between 20-50 mines) - $46.80
The patient pays for the session with me, receives a receipt and goes to a Medicare office for a rebate.
